FCC push to regulate news draws fire

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) pushed back on Monday against a contention by a Democratic FCC commissioner that the government should create new regulations to promote diversity in news programming. Barton was reacting to a proposal made last week by FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, who in a speech suggested that broadcasters be subject to a new "public values test" every four years. "I hope …that you do not mean to suggest that it is the job of the federal government, through the [FCC], to determine the content that is available for Americans to consume,” Barton wrote Monday in a letter to Copps.

Copps had suggested that the test would make a broadcaster's license renewal contingent upon proof that they meet a prospective set of federal criteria.  He said outlets should be mandated to do the following: prove they have made a meaningful commitment to public affairs and news programming, prove they are committed to diversity programming (for instance, by showing that they depict women and minorities), report more to the government about which shows they plan to air, require greater disclosure about who funds political ads and devote 25 percent of their prime-time coverage to local news. The regulations would apply to all news outlets operating on the public airwaves.

In his letter, Barton questioned whether Copps believes the government should reinstate the defunct Fairness Doctrine, a controversial standard that required broadcast licensees to offer "balanced" coverage. Critics saw it as an affront to free speech. Barton also asked whether "five commissioners can do a better job of ensuring that Americans have access to a wide diversity of content and viewpoints than Americans can themselves by expressing their preferences ...in the vigorously competitive marketplace." The Federal Communications Commission has an ongoing project about media diversity that promises to issue a report on whether Americans have access to adequate sources of news, but the effort has come under strong criticism and the FCC has not stated when the report will be released (See America Soon To Lose Sovereignty--US To Join The Global Government Of The Kingdom Of  The Anti-Christ).

COMMENTS: From Real Americans

About The Proposals

Of Elitist Communists In Washington DC

It seems to me that Michael Copps' proposed mandates shred a little known and often ignored document known as the US Constitution. And at the same time that he is proposing this for broadcast media, he is also proposing to regulate the Internet (via so-called "network neutrality" regulation) to achieve similar control over that medium. Can an FCC Commissioner be fired for breaking his vow to uphold the Constitution, I wonder? BY BG on 12/06/2010 at 15:05

The government deciding what news about the government is important for us to hear ??? And this is on top of the proposed 'net neutrality' government content control ??? BY Cowboy on 12/06/2010 at 16:09

What part of "Congress shall make no law" does the FCC not understand? Congress should hold hearings with the FCC commissioners -simply ask them to quote the first amendment. Every time they get it wrong, Congress should cut their budget 20%. Good place to start balancing the budget. BY Dan on 12/06/2010 at 16:12

I thought that 1984 was 26 years ago! Isn't this bureaucrat Copps a little late to the party? This is why gun sales are at an all time high folks. BY orlandocajun on 12/06/2010 at 16:15

I don't need a media nanny nor do the American people. Back off FCC and worry about the unfair and unbalanced NPR. We don't need the government to control what we see on news shows, we can do that ourselves using our remote controls. The FCC should be more concerned with shutting down NPR for firing Juan Williams than telling We the People what to watch and listen to. I suspect this stunt is designed to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, which in my opinion, isn't fair at all.  Note to FCC: Stay off my TV and Internet! You have no business lecturing anyone regarding the content of news or TV shows. Americans ARE given access to both sides. Do you even WATCH Television and Cable News? At ALL? BY Anonymous

There is ONE "Right" leaning News station. Fox. ALL OTHERS lean "Left". And that ONE "Right" leaning News station blows ALL the others out of the water, ratings wise. Ever hear of a LIBERAL radio network called "Air America"? No? That's because they don't EXIST anymore, because NO ONE was interested in listening. Americans HAVE access to both sides of the issue(s). They have chosen. Overwhelmingly. And the Left HATES the fact that Americans have CHOSEN NOT to watch, or listen, to THEM.      Another attempt by the Obama Marxist regime and the commie loving left to take over. Controlling the news is the first thing and good Stalinist does as they seize a country. BY Regulas on 12/07/2010 at 08:26

…you lefties just don't get it. These radio stations you rail against don't get public support they work in the free market place. If the vast majority of people did not listen and support their advertisers they would not be on the air waves. Unlike NPR if it were not for tax payer support they would not be on the air BECAUSE NOBODY LISTENS TO THEIR LEFT WING BS. BY Joe on 12/07/2010 at 08:37

What Copps is suggesting is similar to what they do in Venezuela and other communist countries. He should be removed from his position in the FCC immediately since his views are un-American and a danger to our freedom of speech and other liberties. I propose that one of our members of Congress call a hearing to discuss why and how a person with such anti-democratic views found his way to such a position within our government.  BY DSR on 12/07/2010 at 08:45

I bet you wouldn't be so gung ho on bringing back the Orwellian-named "Fairness Doctrine" if it meant that the big three TV networks, New York Times, Washington Post, and every major big city daily newspaper had to install Christian conservatives on their staff.  BY DSR on 12/07/2010 at 08:50

Neither the "Fairness Doctrine" nor the ETP are necessary in a free market. Consumer choice drives the content on the airwaves. The reason "Air America" (never was there a more inaccurate name) failed was because Libs were more interested in listening to Howard Stern & Snoop Dawg than listening to Al Franken. Conclusion

The anti-Christ’s plan is to divide the world into ten kingdoms, all using the same monetary system and one religion. This includes shutting out all dissenting voices over the Internet and television. (see Ten Worldwide Super States: Playing Monopoly* with the devil). The ten-king nations will be forcefully democratic with rotating presidencies;  the European Union (EU) is the model. When the time for the anti-Christ arrives, he will be one of these ten kings, according to Revelation 17:10-11. The kings only receive power to grasp control for the anti-Christ at the last hour. The rotating presidencies of these ten super-states will furnish the kings. How will this happen? The EU has paved the way. The super-states will be divided into ten economic and political powers. They are the 1. EU, 2. North America (Canada, America, Mexico, Central America, and outlaying islands), 3. South America, 4. Russia, 5. Central Asia (The Islamic Republics), 6. East Asia (China, Mongolia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, etc.), 7. Oceania (Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and surrounding islands), 8. Southeast Asia (India to Viet Nam), 9. North Africa/Middle-East (Saudi Arabia to Western Sahara, etc.), and 10. Africa (Sub-Sahara, Madagascar). These divisions could be debated. For example, India would go well with Oceania since many Indians speak English and would fare well with Australia. Time will tell. North America has begun the process. NAFTA and CAFTA are the start. A North American Super-Highway from the mid-southwestern coast of Mexico to Winnipeg, Canada--through the heartland of America, has begun.

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; buy receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

 (Rev. 17:12-13)
