SEOUL, Oct. 14 (UPI) --
Legions of couples said "I do" in a mass wedding near Seoul performed by the
Rev. Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church, church officials
said. Church officials said some 40,000 men and women either took their vows
or renewed them in a global ceremony, the Los Angeles Times reported. An
estimated 7,500 couples stood before Moon in an outdoor square at Sun Moon
University, the school the religious leader founded in Asan, South Korea,
near Seoul. Tens of thousands of other couples united on other continents --
including Europe and the Americas -- to be part of the "10.14 True Parents
Cosmic Blessing Ceremony," participating in the proceedings via the church's
Web site, officials said.
Wednesday's global event came nearly 50 years after Moon, 89, arranged the
marriages of 24 couples in his first mass wedding at the university. Onstage
with his wife, Moon sprinkled holy water on his followers. After an exchange
of rings, Moon led congratulatory cheers as confetti filled the air, the
Times said. Since he first performed the mass marriages, Moon has weathered
many sex scandals and his Unification Church has been criticized as a cult.
"Mr. Moon calls himself a Messiah (see The Coronation of Moon), for goodness sake," Tark Ji-il, a religion professor at Busan Presbyterian University in South Korea, told the Times. "Through his sexual relationships, he has claimed that he can cleanse the dirty blood of humankind." But, Tark said, Moon "symbolized and ritualized the wedding." Moon founded Unification Church and also founded News World Communications Inc., which owns United Press International.
Moons Missionary Journeys Since 2000
In 2000 Moon joined Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan in sponsoring the Million Family March in Washington D.C., a follow-up event to the Million Man March held in 1995. In January 2001 Moon sponsored President George W. Bush's Inaugural Prayer Luncheon for Unity and Renewal. In 2001 Moon presided over the wedding of now-excommunicated Roman Catholic Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo and Maria Sung, a Korean acupuncturist. This attracted worldwide media attention. Milingo later founded the controversial organization Married Priests Now. In 2003 Moon sponsored the first Peace Cup international club football tournament.
Between 2002 and 2006, Moon and his wife were banned from entry into Germany and the other 14 Schengen treaty countries, on the grounds that "Reverend Moon and his wife were considered by the federal government to be leaders of a "sect" that endangered the personal and social development of young people". The Netherlands and a few other Schengen states let Moon and his wife enter their countries in 2005.
Coronation by Members of United States Congress: In 2004, at a March 23 ceremony in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-Ill.) wore white gloves and carried a pillow holding an ornate crown that was placed on Moon's head.
Moon delivered a long speech in which he stated that he was "sent to Earth . . . to save the world's six billion people ...Emperors, kings and presidents ...have declared to all Heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent."
120-city world speaking tour: On September 12, 2005, at the age of 85, Moon inaugurated the Universal Peace Federation with a 120-city world speaking tour. At each city, Moon delivered his speech titled "God's Ideal Family - the Model for World Peace."
Critics contrast Moon's "opulent" personal lifestyle with that of church members who are asked to sacrifice both in their careers and in donating most of what little they have. The Moon family situation is described as one of "luxury and privilege" and as "lavish."
Home for the True Family was a guarded 18-acre (73,000 m2) mini-castle in Irvington, New York, a tiny suburb located along a sweep of the Hudson River. Named East Garden, after Eden, the estate included two smaller houses and a three-story brick mansion with 12 bedrooms, seven baths, a bowling alley, and a dining room equipped with a waterfall and pond. There were other castles and mansions too — in South Korea, Germany, Scotland, England — and few expenses were spared. The children had tutors from Japan, purebred horses, motorbikes, sports cars, and first-class vacations with blank-check spending. "The kids got whatever they wanted," says Donna Collins, who grew up in the church. "At one point, the Moon kids were each getting $40,000 or $50,000 a month for allowance. They had wads of cash. I remember once in London where [one of Justin’s sisters] spent like $2,000 a day; I saw a drawer filled with Rolexes and diamonds."
Moon owns or sponsors major business enterprises, including The Washington Times, the United Press International, and Pyeonghwa Motors. A small sampling of other operations include computers and religious icons in Japan, seafood in Alaska, weapons and ginseng in Korea, huge tracts of land in South America, a recording studio and travel agency in Manhattan, a horse farm in Texas and a golf course in California.
In a 1992 letter to The New York Times, author Richard Quebedeaux, who had taken part in several Unification Church projects, criticized Moon's financial judgement by saying, "Mr. Moon may well be a good religious leader with high ideals, but he has also shown himself to be a poor businessman."
Church Role In Munitions Manufacturing
Church-related businesses engaged in munitions manufacturing in South Korea during the 1960s, as reported by the Fraser Committee a United States Congressional committee which investigated the Unification Church and its relationship with the government of South Korea in 1978. According to the same report, Unification Church owned Tongil Group, then South Korea's 35th largest industrial conglomerate, which was involved in weapons manufacture and "is an important defense contractor in Korea. It is involved in the production of M-16 rifles, antiaircraft guns, and other weapons."
In fact, as South Korea is technically still at war with North Korea, all large manufacturers are required by law to accept military contracts, as Tongil Group was obligated to do under mandatory South Korean law. Moon's fourth son, Kook Jin "Justin" Moon founded Kahr Arms, a small-arms company based in Blauvelt, New York with a factory in Worcester, Massachusetts. According to the Washington Post, "Some former members and gun industry critics perceive a contradiction between the church's teachings and its corporate involvement in marketing weapons promoted for their concealability and lethality."
Moon's Proclamation
Moon claims that God appeared to him in 1935 at Easter time and explained in a vision that Jesus was not able to complete the mission and asked Moon to assume the position as the True Father and lead the world to salvation. So, Moon took on that mantle of the Messiah. Tim LaHaye and Jerry Falwell uphold him. When Moon first came to this country he was widely recognized as a cult. People were trying to rescue their children from the Unification Cult (called the Moonies).
Moon's Book
This is from Rev. Sun Myung Moon's book, "The Master Speaks", "My dream is to organize a Christian political party including the Protestant denominations, Catholics and all the religious sects. Then the communist power will be helpless before ours. We have to purge the corrupted politicians and the sons of God must rule the world. The separation between religion and politics is what Satan likes most. ...Upon my command to the Europeans and others throughout the world to come live in the United States, wouldn't they obey me? Then what would happen? We can embrace the religious world in one arm and the political world in the other. With this great ideology, if you are not confident to do this, you had better die!"
Directly From the False Prophet's Mouth:
The following are the false doctrines taught by Moon. Reverend Moon nurtured a growing community of faithful disciples. It was known as the weeping church. By 1957, churches were established in thirty Korean cities and towns. In 1958, the first missionary went to neighboring Japan; in 1959, the first missionaries arrived in America.
This family of disciples was the foundation upon which the holy wedding, the marriage of the Lamb foretold in the Book of Revelation, could take place. On March 16, 1960, Reverend Moon was blessed in holy marriage to Hak Ja Han. This marked the beginning of the restoration of humankind back into God's lineage. By the power of God and sacrificial love, Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han established the position of True Parents. They are the first couple to have the complete blessing of God, and to be able to bring forth children with no original sin. Hak Ja Han and her mother, a devout Christian, had also fled south during the Korean War. They soon thereafter joined the Unification Church. At the age of seventeen, Miss Han dedicated herself to the mission of bride of the Messiah. She has, with unwavering courage and dignity, stood by her husband through every hardship.
All people, whether previously married or single, can receive the blessing of God upon their marriages through Reverend and Mrs. Moon standing as the True Parents. The number of couples who have received this blessing has grown, from 36 in 1960, to 8,000 in 1982, to 30,000 in 1992, and most recently, to 360,000 in 1995.
The large weddings represent the unity of humankind by joining together men and women of different races and nationalities. Reverend Moon teaches that through the blessing, fallen men and women can be engrafted into the true lineage of God. Consequently, for fallen humanity, which traces its roots to the false lineage created by Adam and Eve, the blessing is the greatest hope. The couples blessed by Reverend and Mrs. Moon accept God's call to establish ideal, God-centered families. The establishment of ideal families is the starting point for the building of a peaceful world.
Main Teachings
There are three main parts to the Principle (the basic tenants of the Moonies' beliefs): the first part deals with the nature of God and why He created man and the universe; the second part explains why God's ideal for man was not realized and how evil came into this world; the third part explains how God has been working throughout history to restore humanity and establish His ideal world of true love. (Basically, what Moon falsely teaches is that because Adam and Eve fell into sin all people are out of the lineage of God and need to be brought back into the true lineage of God for salvation and the world will be at peace. In order to be brought into the true lineage of God's family people have to have a blessed marriage performed through vows by True Parents. There have been many attempts throughout the history of mankind by True Parents to establish this "plan" of salvation but all attempts have failed until now, that is, until Moon was "called" to be the Messiah and, along with his wife, the True Parents are here to save the world if you are blessed by them through their "blessed" wedding ceremonies).
According to Moon's website God, the Parent of humankind, has worked through various religions to liberate His children from evil and selfishness. Every religion teaches people to overcome fallen nature, through precepts of humility, self-denial and unselfish service. Philosophy does the same, by teaching people to control their passions and work for the larger purpose, as dictated by reason. But the human struggle to defeat the fallen nature will have no end until the problem of the original sin is solved and humanity can be restored to a pure, God-centered lineage. For this, the world has long awaited the Messiah, a new Adam who, with a new Eve, can establish the position of True Parents and a family of perfect love (pure blasphemy).
Thus, all men and women, no matter what kind of life they have lived here on earth, eventually will be elevated to the highest realm of the spirit world. This is because God, as the Parent of all humankind, cannot suffer anyone enduring eternal separation from him, and, as the almighty Creator, He will ultimately draw all His children to Him. But again, because human beings have their own freedom, this process of restoration and development requires that each person take responsibility for his or her own growth. (Moon teaches their is no literal hell. Is that what Falwell condones when he accepts bailouts by the Rev. Moon?) Thus, the way of salvation is a path of self-denial and self-sacrifice, according to Moon.
Moon's Third Adam
Coming as a new Adam, the Messiah has the mission to realize for the first time the three blessings (as explained in Part One, [see the Unification "church's" website if you have time to waste]) by becoming one with God and establishing an ideal family as the basis for an ideal society, nation and world. As the head of the first ideal family, we call the Messiah and his bride True Parents. The True Parents will establish a new lineage untainted by sin (the Moonies are supposedly this line of sinless people). Through uniting with the True Parents, men and women can separate from Satan and be engrafted into the lineage which has nothing to do with the fall.
As we saw with the story of Adam and Eve, the Bible contains symbolic language. Jesus stated that he spoke in parables and symbols. In the case of the biblical description of Christ's coming, the word "heaven" does not refer to the literal sky but connotes great value, sacredness, or goodness. Representing and embodying these qualities, Christ will again come as a man on earth (known as the Messiah, who Moon claims to be), with the power and presence of God, rather than in a supernatural fashion by literally descending from the sky.
Because Adam and Eve did not fulfill God's ideal, and because Jesus was prevented from bringing God's kingdom on earth (as a result of being rejected by his contemporaries), someone will be born on earth as the third Adam to complete the providence of restoration. He will destroy Satan's dominion over man and substantialize God's three blessings on the earth. Born of a woman, somewhere in the world, he will finally cure the infection of false love, brought on by the fall, by establishing a pure, God-centered lineage into which all humankind, of every race, religion and nation, can be engrafted. The future of humankind is not gloomy, but hopeful. All will be saved.
The "Blessing" of Moon
Moon's marriage blessings are the path to salvation (blasphemy). Through the Blessing we renounce the false love which has polluted the human family throughout history, and commit together with God to building a world of true love. Based upon this commitment to God on your part, your marriage is an eternal marriage, as real in the spirit world as on earth. This is solemnized through four vows, through which you affirm that you will become:
1 --a true man or woman who practices sexual purity and life for the sake of others;
2 --a true husband or wife who respects True Parents' example and establishes an eternal family which brings joy to God;
3 --a parent who rears your children to follow the tradition of true love for the sake of the family and world; and
4 --an ideal family which contributes to world peace.
The Blessing has five steps, each with its own purpose and significance. It is important to understand and appreciate the value of each.
The Chastening Ceremony creates the foundation to cleanse the historical sin between men and women. In man-women relations, to one degree or another, we have all erred. So have our ancestors. In this ceremony, the husband and wife chasten each other three times from a position representing God. This simple act opens the door to God's forgiveness and grace. At the same time it is an occasion for the couple's mutual chastening and forgiveness. This allows us to begin a new life of pure love.
God created man and woman to become true husbands and wives and to create ideal families through unselfish love. As we know from the biblical record, however, something went wrong in the beginning. The first parents created a dysfunctional, fallen family, in which disunity between parents and children, and intense sibling rivalry, led to murder. Such a family was clearly separated from God's love, life and lineage. We all are descended from the false parents of that family.
In the Holy Wine Ceremony, we make the spiritual transition from the lineage of false parents to that of the True Parents. Through this ceremony, we each are restored conditionally to the position of "original man" and "original woman," like Adam and Eve before the Fall.
In the ceremony, the officiator gives the Holy Wine to the woman. She bows to him and drinks half of it. She then gives the Holy Wine to her husband who bows to her and drinks the remainder. He bows and gives the empty cup to his wife who bows and returns it to the officiator.
The Holy Blessing is a simple and beautiful event. For betrothed couples, it is their wedding ceremony. For previously married couples it is a ceremony of re-dedication of their marriage and family to God.
The ceremony includes several traditional elements. One is a sprinkling of Holy Water. This represents the rebirth or renewal of the husband and wife together as a Blessed couple. Then there is a recitation of vows. Here the couples pledge to consummate the ideal of the creation of God as an eternal husband and wife, to rear their children to live up to the Will of God, and to love the people of the world as God does. Finally, the bride and groom exchange rings and the officiator offers a prayer and proclaims the participants husband and wife standing within the realm of God's original and eternal Blessing.
The forty days following the Blessing is an historical time period for each couple. Just as Jesus began his mission on the foundation of forty days of fasting, couples who have received the Blessing are enjoined to offer a period of sexual abstinence for a period of forty days after the Blessing.
Many couples have discovered from experience that the Separation Period can be a significant step in the process of transformation and renewal. Sexual abstinence is an honored religious tradition. On the spiritual level, problems are often worked out during the Separation Period. Moreover, the act of love itself takes on a new dimension of sacredness after offering the period of separation.
After the separation period, the couple together carry out the Three-Day Ceremony. This is the completion of sanctification, in which the couple is restored to the position of true husband and wife. Over a three-day period, the wife gives rebirth to her husband from the position of mother and then receives him in the position of wife. Then in the position of father, the husband gives rebirth to his wife and receives her in the position of husband. Through this process, God breathes into the couple a new conjugal life.
According to Moon the Blessing is not a quick-fix or cure-all. It is, for most participants, a profound experience of the living God and a profound new spiritual bond between husband and wife. Many experience God's presence for days, weeks and even months. But the bliss eventually subsides and the work of perfecting marriage continues. The difference after the Blessing is that, as a couple, you are working upon a greater spiritual foundation for marriage and family life.
You have also shared a very special experience with other couples in your home community and around the world. If the building blocks of community are shared experience, shared values and shared vision, this Blessing and the global relatedness it engenders contribute in a vital way to the emergence of a world embodying the ideals of true love and peace. The continued expansion of this community offers hope and vitality for the global human family in the new millennium.
Moon's Ultimate Blasphemy
Moon will say he does not think that Jesus had failed. But if you read what Moon says from his website you see that is exactly what Moon is purporting. Moon says: Tragically though, Jesus was unjustly put to death on the cross, because he was not received by the people of Israel, whom God had chosen. The Messiah, Jesus, who should have restored the position of True Parents, then produced true children, and risen to the position of King of Kings, was prevented from establishing even the position of a true husband with God's Marriage Blessing. Because of this, he could not establish the position of True Parents or multiply true children. Instead he died on the cross. (What Moon is blasphemously saying is that Jesus was supposed to be married and produce physical children in order to establish God's lineage, and Jesus and His wife would be the True Parents. Since Jesus did not accomplish that mission it is now Moons turn to be the Messiah. Moon does not believe that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh but just another man called of God [and Falwell applauds Moon, and his money of course]).
According to Moon, Heaven gave its blessing for the Messiah of the Second Coming to appear on the foundation of the spiritual restoration Jesus carried out throughout the 2,000 years of Christian history. The returning Messiah (which Moon believes is himself) comes with the incredible burden of completing the mission of True Parents. To accomplish his mission, he must first, above everything else, achieve victory over the satanic realm. He must then go on to achieve victory in the spiritual realm as well. He must fully engage the satanic and spiritual realms, both of which cannot be sensed through the five physical senses, and be victorious in the life-and-death battle to subjugate the devil, Satan. Additionally, he must win over the many religious (like Falwell and Robertson, etc.) and philosophical leaders who are in the spirit world. None of this, however, can be accomplished through forced subjugation. Centering on God's character of absolute love (and Moon's money), he must convince them by revealing the universal principles of religion and the universe and in this way bring them to a natural surrender. Reverend Moon, who stands here before you, is the one who has appeared in this world bearing this incredible mission of the True Parent.
Straight From the Horse's Mouth
The phrase, "True Parent," does not appear in any encyclopedia. It is not a phrase that I created, nor is it something that anyone in the world can attach to my name easily. Instead, it is the destiny and blessing that Heaven has bestowed on my wife and me. The position of True Parent carries with it the vertical missions of Savior, Messiah, and returning Lord, responsibilities that have never been realized before in history or will ever be seen again in the future. For this reason, human beings still affiliated with the fallen realm must fulfill a number of conditions in order to attend the True Parents and accomplish Heaven's will. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works (II Cor. 11:13-15).
