     The National Education Association (NEA) continues to alienate more and more of its conservative constituents as the organization showed its liberal leanings at its 2010 national convention. At this year's meeting in New Orleans, the largest professional organization and labor union in the U.S. recognized a new caucus: the NEA Drag Queen Caucus. "They already have had the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, [and] Transgender Caucus and apparently felt that the drag queens needed their own caucus," explains Finn Laursen, executive director of Christian Educators Association International (CEAI).      "America, I think, needs to respond and to realize what the National Education Association stands for; they're not hiding it.  It's appalling to many of our conservative Christian educators who, in their own lives, could not support this kind of thing but find that their dues are being used to support just those kinds of thing," he adds. Laursen also tells OneNewsNow there was a movement this year to see the NEA's pro-abortion stance changed to a more neutral position, but that effort failed. "The organization and its delegates were just unwilling to step back and take no position on abortion," he laments. "They're going to continue their pro-abortion stance."

 

     The CEAI executive director shares that every year following the NEA convention; he sees a spike in interest towards his organization from people looking for an alternative. He says that after this year's event, his organization "even had to put in an extra phone line and bring in extra staff just to answer the phones."

     NEA Recognizes Drag Queen Group: The National Education Association (NEA) has been widely criticized as being out of touch with America's parents and schoolchildren, seemingly more interested in gaining influence and recognition while the quality of education they defend continues to decline. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that the NEA has recognized a drag queen caucus at their recent national convention. Headed by Peter J. Konrath, the group doesn't appear to be advocating for specific drag queen teacher causes, like naming elementary schools for Kathy Griffin, but seems more interested in raising money for scholarships. It is unclear how many caucus members are actually teachers.

 

     According to his Facebook page, Konrath runs The Ricardo Correa Scholarship Foundation, named for Konrath's partner who died in 2004 after what Konrath describes as "a roller coaster of a relationship." The foundation gives out scholarships to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) students. Headquartered out of Milwaukee (the center of the drag queen teacher universe), the NEA Drag Queen Caucus holds several "Ric-Fest" events to raise funds, including beer pong tournaments at local Milwaukee gay bars. They also sell trading cards of local gay bartenders and drag queens. $1 will get you a bartender trading card, while $3 will buy you a "shirtless or risqué picture" trading card of a bartender. The drag queen caucus had a booth at the NEA national convention, and plans to expand their scholarship program nationwide next year.

     Last week, the San Jose Mercury News published an op-ed I wrote which centered on the arrogance of the California Teachers Association. I noted that CTA, state affiliate of the National Education Association, is quite out of touch with its members when it comes to political spending.  While its members are politically mixed, CTA’s political spending goes only in a leftward direction. Also last week, the NEA, which purports to have children’s best interests at heart, wrapped up its yearly convention, where due to its Race to the Top funding criteria, the Obama administration came in for some harsh words. While NEA President Dennis Van Roekel’s comments were covered in some depth by the mainstream media, something rather unusual went unmentioned — the emergence of a new “recognized” NEA Caucus. (In the union’s own words, a caucus is “an internal entity that is recognized by NEA for the sole purpose of attempting to influence NEA governance.”)

 

     In the years to come, this new “internal entity” — the NEA Drag Queen Caucus — will most assuredly be trying its best to influence NEA policy. And NEA policy has been known to affect education policy. For example, due in part to a NEA manual, there are now preteens in school-sponsored gay-straight clubs all over the country… and parents do not have to be notified of their children’s participation. If you are not yet spinning, a union member at the convention was told by someone “manning” the Drag Queen Caucus booth that a transvestite beauty contest was in the works for (the convention) next year. I urge anyone who would like to let the NEA know what they think of their Drag Queen Caucus to please contact them. As Lily Tomlin once said, “No matter how cynical I get, I just can’t keep up.”

 

 

Purpose Of NEA Caucuses:

 

     A "recognized NEA caucus" is an internal entity that is recognized by NEA for the sole purpose of attempting to influence NEA governance.  Toward this end, caucuses may advise, lobby, and/or otherwise communicate with NEA governance. Unless recognized pursuant to these Guidelines, a caucus may not include a reference to NEA in its name. NEA Drag Queen Caucus. NEA Gay & Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus.

 

     Also, this was found on NEA’s website calendar of events to be celebrated: Diversity Events for July-December 2010: October 1 Communist China Established In Tiananmen Square in 1949, Mao Zedong, chairman of the Communist Party of China, proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China, saying that the "Chinese people have stood up!" (This diverse event is to be recognized along with Muslim holidays and Mother’s day. NEA has decided celebrating the establishment of the Chinese Communist nation is a good thing.
