In 1930's Germany, the new socialist government began indoctrinating children in the quasi-military organization, the Hitler Youth, to inform on their parents should they overhear discussions subversive (fishy) to the policies of the Leader. As the noose was tightened, local community organizers were appointed to watch their neighbors and were told to report subversive comments to the bureaucrats above them. Neighbors informed on neighbors, some for reasons of patriotism or loyalty, some from fear. A modern inquisition ensued; a terror to free thought and expression. Increasingly harsh penalties were meted out to those who dared to dissent.
The socialist governments of the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, N. Korea, Cuba, Yugoslavia, and the People's Republic of China employed the same citizen informer techniques. Citizens of those societies were reduced to either silence or whispered discussion only among those they trusted the most. Of course none of those things would ever occur here in the land of the free. But wait... Now on the White House website posted by Macon Phillips comes an eerily similar request for citizens to inform on their neighbors. It states, "There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to the end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can't keep track of all of them here at the White House, we're asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."
Read this again carefully. The government of the United States is openly asking citizens to report rumors, the contents of casual conversation, and the contents of emails. They decry the fact that they are unable to "keep track" of the communication between citizens effectively and are asking for help from informers. Of course forwarded emails would contain the electronic addresses of the sender. Does this sound like the country you know (knew)? Are these the words of people who think of themselves as public servants, or is this something darker? Does a constitutional government tasked with protecting the rights of its citizens ask them to inform on each other to the White House?
Are we now like one of those totalitarian states? No. But we have become more collectivist. Is the move toward appointing unaccountable Czars with enormous authority, the takeover of multiple industries (corporatism [fascism]), the restructuring of the economy on a socialist-command model, and the request for citizens to inform on their fellows a step closer to that ugly place? Unquestionably, the answer has to be yes. We must be concerned with the direction in which we are headed as well as the breathtaking speed.
Forty years ago, a philosopher named Leonard Peikoff wrote a book (still in print) called The Ominous Parallels. In it he shows the parallels (then scarcely noticeable) between the rise of Hitler's socialism and the trends in the United States. At the time, the book could have been dismissed as the ranting of an over-zealous, though erudite and articulate, conspiracy nut. In retrospect, Peikoff appears to have been quite prescient. Reading it today, it appears like a roadmap of the last half century and how we got to this point. The implications are clear. If the direction of the nation and the philosophic perspective of the populace isn't brought back to the founding principles, the end point is predetermined. Unfortunately, the premises underlying the agenda are shared by both major parties. The opposition party is neutered in that it has accepted the premises of the socialists, a strategy doomed to failure.
My father and several uncles risked their lives in World War II to bring down the socialist threat of the German and Italian Axis powers. They survived. Many of their buddies were maimed or killed in that struggle. That generation successfully destroyed the military threat, but their efforts were blunted by the persistence of the altruist-collectivist philosophical virus which animated those socialists and which has infected the USA. Aside from the anti-Semitism of that time, both Western Europe and the USA are thoroughly imbued with the language and programs of the National Socialist program including its major platforms of National Health care, National Retirement benefits, National business plans, National agricultural plans, social safety nets, politically correct expression expectations, national ministers or Czars who answer only to the Leader, and the endless "we" talk so characteristic of collectivist societies.

Who most resembles 'Nazis'?

Let's talk about "national socialism" – because that, indeed, is exactly what Barack Obama and his friends in the Congress are actively promoting and enacting in America today. The very word "Nazi" is indeed an acronym for national socialism – the political and economic system Hitler infamously imposed on Germany in the 1930s. It was then and remains today, despite the denials historical revisionists, a "left-wing" idea. All socialism is, by definition, a left-wing notion. If the left-right political spectrum has any meaning, it is that those on the left tend to favor government intervention while those on the right favor non-government solutions to problems. That is the traditional and accepted definition – much as those on the left would like to blur that understanding.
National socialists, whether they seek to kill Jews or old people or the disabled or unborn babies, will always be national socialists – no matter what kind of lipstick they put on the pig. Furthermore, people like our Founding Fathers, who sought to diffuse power because they understood its unchecked and unlimited centralization represented a grave threat to personal liberty represent the polar opposite of national socialists.
While it may be an overstatement to compare Obama with Hitler, it is even more far-fetched to characterize his political opponents as Nazis and fascists because they very clearly want to limit the size and scope of government – preferring that people be free to government themselves to the greatest extent possible. Obama has power. His opponents, for the most part, do not. Furthermore, Obama seeks to use his power to impose policies that have, like it or not, a striking resemblance to those Hitler promoted in the 1930s. Like what?
-Abortion
-Infanticide
-Government deciding life-and-death issues in dispensing medical care for both older people and those with serious illnesses;
-Unfair treatment of Jews, in Obama's case, with regard to Middle East conflict;
-So-called public-private partnerships – blurring the line between government responsibilities and the private sector. This is one of the definitions of fascism;
-Picking winners and losers among corporations and the dispensing of government favors and punishments to them;
-Hiring and firing of supposedly private corporation executives;
-Attacking free expression;
-Secrecy
-Using taxpayer funds for the hiring of political partisans to "organize" communities and sign up new voters;
-Demonizing political opponents;
-Encouraging citizens to "rat out" friends, family members and others who oppose his policies;
-Keeping tabs on political opponents;
-Filling top government posts with like-minded political extremists who would normally be regarded as internal security threats;
-Ignoring the Constitution;
-Blaming his predecessor and the fundamentals of the American political and economic system for all the problems besetting the country;
I mean, I could go on and on. George W. Bush and other predecessors in the White House had their faults. Some of them did terrible things, showed incredibly bad judgment, made horrible mistakes. But I can think of no precedent for someone in the White House doing all of the above at once – all of which bear striking parallels to the leadership of infamous fascists such as Benito Mussolini and Hitler.
Worse, the leaders of his party and his acolytes in the media can see no danger posed by any of these policies. In fact, like good Germans, they blame the opposition in the most disgusting, vile ways – often unfairly accusing them of doing what they themselves do. Why is it acceptable for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to say American citizens attending congressional town halls are swastika-carrying thugs, but wrong for her political opponents to point out the similarities between her party's policies and those of Nazi Germany?
Why is it acceptable for Gary Trudeau of Doonesbury fame to compare those who want to see Barack Obama's birth certificate with Adolf Hitler, but wrong for his political opponents to point out the similarities between the way the president and Democratic Congress are attempting to squelch dissent and grab unchallenged, unchecked power the way fascists of the past have? Why is it acceptable to accuse Americans devoted to preserving their constitutional republic of resembling neo-Nazis, but wrong for those same Americans to point out the death-worshipping, eugenics-friendly notion of government health care rationing?

I'm not going to make the case that America under Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress has become a totalitarian police state. But, I will make the case that Washington is leading us in that direction.
-What do you call it when the government asks its supporters to "snitch" on opponents of its policies?
-What do you call it when the government wants to monitor broadcasts and establish itself as the guardian of "fairness" on the airwaves?
-What do you call it when the government seeks to take over the private and personal health-care decisions of the people – establishing bureaucracies to make life-and-death decisions and banning unapproved transactions between doctors and patients?
-What do you call it when the government hires and fires the top executives of major corporations and redirects their corporate policies?
-What do you call it when government officials refuse to turn over documents necessary to establishing whether they are constitutionally eligible to hold office?
-What do you call it when the government funds political extremist groups that have broken the law in successful efforts to empower leaders?
-What do you call it when the government turns the Census, designed as a tool to ensure representative government, into a weapon designed to spy on the most personal aspects of the life of citizens?
-What do you call it when the government becomes the sole arbiter of whether you can keep some of any of the wealth you accumulated legally?
-What do you call it when the government ignores the laws of the land and replaces them with the arbitrary whims of men?
-What do you call it when the government picks and chooses winners and losers in the business marketplace?
-What do you call it when the government strikes fear into the hearts of the sovereign citizens it is supposed to serve?
-What do you call it when the government metes out punishment not just for criminal actions, but for "criminal thoughts"?
-What do you call it when honest and open expressions of dissent are characterized as the expressions of "angry mobs"?
-What do you call it when government-created joblessness is used to promote policies of government control?
-What do you call it when the government exceeds its authority under the Constitution and ignores any limits on its power?
I don't know about you, but I call those questions harbingers of totalitarianism.
